Dog and Human Play Research

Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, author of one of our favorite dogs books, Inside of a Dog, runs the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College, which is a research center focused on the behavior and cognition of companion dogs. They’ve launched a citizen science project to explore how dogs and humans play together, and they need our help! They are asking dog owners to submit short videos of themselves playing with their dog....

Daycare Dog of the Month: Tux

Tux may only be fifteen months old, but his dance moves channel the Bangles from 1986. Tux is a Pomapoo—a toy poodle, Pomeranian mix—named because his black and white coloring reminded his humans of a tuxedo. When you pick Tux up, his little front legs go straight out to the sides. Give him a little jiggle, and he does “Walk Like an Egyptian.” Celeste Jackson got Tux as a Christmas present from her husband, Michael Thomas....

Winterizing Your Dog

Dogs need walking, rain, shine, sleet or snow, all year round. Sometimes people ask us if they should buy clothing for their dog for protection against the elements. The answer is that it depends on your dog. Some dogs, like our dog Lexie, love the cold and hate wearing clothing. I don’t dress her for winter because she doesn’t need it, and doesn’t like it. Other dogs do get cold and don’t seem to mind wearing clothes–like Moon Unit....

Noah, 6/1997 - 1/15/2013

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Noah passed away on Tuesday, January 15. At 15 years old, Ms. Noah was pretty spry for her age. She spent time mostly with the little dogs, among whom she had favorites, including Moon Unit and Kookah. She didn’t roughhouse at daycare, but she would smile her doggy smile and wag her tail to let us know she was having a good time hanging out....
